권옥연 화백은 1923년 함경남도 함흥에서 출생하여 어린시절 조부로부터는 서예를, 바이올리니스트였던 아버지에게는 음악을 배우며 성장했다. 아버지와 같은 음악가가 되길 꿈꾸던 소년은 경성 제2고등보통학교(현 경복중고등학교)에 입학하며 미술을 시작하였고, 학생 시절 제20회 《조선미술전람회》(1941)에서 수상하며 미술계에 존재를 드러냈다.
1942년 일본 도쿄 제국미술학교(현 무사시노 미술대학)에 입학하여 서양화를 전공한 그는 한국에 돌아 온 뒤 해방과 전쟁을 겪으면서도 예술에 대한 열정을 버리지 않았다. 1957년 아내 이병복(1927-2017)과 함께 프랑스 유학을 떠난 그는 그랑드 쇼미에르 아카데미 (Académie de la Grand Chaumière)에서 3년간 서양화를 공부하며 《살롱 도톤(Salon d’Automne)》(1957, 1958), 《칸느 그랑프리전(Cannes Grand Prix Exposition)》(1958), 《레알리떼 누벨전(Salon des Réalités Nouvelles)》(1958)에 참여하였다.
프랑스 유학 당시 시인이자 초현실주의 주창자였던 앙드레 브르통(André Breton, 1896-1966)에게 ‘동양적 쉬르레알리즘(초현실주의, Sur-reslism)’이라고 호평 받은 그는 특정 사조나 단체 활동에 참여하여 미술 활동을 펼치기 보다는, 자신만의 톤과 색채 등으로 독창적인 화풍을 이룩해낸 작가이다.
권옥연 화백의 탄생 100주년를 기념하여 준비한 이번 전시에는 절제된 색채 아래 구상과 추상을 넘나 들며, 자신만의 화풍을 정립하기 위해 힘써온 작가의 예술에 대한 순수한 진념을 느낄 수 있는 <부인의 초상>(1951), <절규>(1957), <달맞이 꽃>(1986), <귀향>(1999) 등 1950년대부터 1990년대까지의 주요 작품 20점이 전시된다.

Kwon Ok Yon was born in 1923 in Hamheung, South Hamgyong Province, and grew up learning calligraphy from his grandfather and music from his father, a violinist. Dreaming of becoming a musician like his father, he began studying art upon enrolling in Gyeongseong Secondary School (now Gyeongbok Middle and High School), making his art world debut while still a student upon receiving an award at the 20th Joseon Art Exhibition (1941).
Kwon went on to study Western painting in Japan, entering the Tokyo Imperial Art School (now Musashino Art University) in 1942, and maintained his passion for art even after his return to Korea, through the many tribulations of liberation and war. In 1957, he and his wife, Lee Byung-bok (1927-2017), traveled to France to study at the Académie de la Grand Chaumière, where he continued his study of Western painting for three years and participated in the Salon d'Automne (1957, 1958), the Cannes Grand Prix Exposition (1958), and the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles (1958).
Hailed as the vanguard of "Oriental Surrealism" by poet and Surrealist advocate André Breton (1896-1966) during his time in France, Kwon developed a singular painting style characterized by his own tones and hues rather than joining any particular school or group.
In commemoration of the centennial of Kwon's birth, this exhibition features 20 major works spanning the 1950s to the 1990s — including Portrait of Wife(1951), Cry(1957), Primrose(1986), and Return to Hometown(1999) — that showcase the artist’s sincerity and commitment to establishing a vision entirely his own, moving freely between figuration and abstraction while maintaining the restrained palette that became his signature.
