낮게날다 FLYING LOW

깊은 호흡!
낮게 날며 관조하는 민성식의 시선. 시선을 따라나서 보자. 작가 특유의 조형 언어인 선명한 색과 과감한 면 분할. 선이 만드는 미니멀한 구획의 진공상태를 느낄 즈음, 가상과 현실의 경계에 선 이야기로 일상이 유추되기 시작한다. 그리고 휴~우, 들숨 다음에 이어지는 익숙한 날숨!! 다시 들숨!!! 파란색으로 표현되는 광활함 혹은 높은 고도, 수영장, 물. 주황색은 마치 보존된 일상의 힘이 너른 풀밭의 초록색 위와 회색빛의 콘크리트 미 완공된 구조물 위에서 펼쳐진다. 그 일상의 여운은 사라진 주인공의 일상이며, 정확치 않은 유추의 대상일 뿐, 그 어느 누구의 일상이기만 한다. 간혹 어떤 상황이 벌어지고 난 후의 짐작만이 가능하다. 짐작되는 서사의 화면을 따라 시선이 더욱 디테일함으로 치닫게 되면, 다시 날숨!!!

낮게 날다
민성식의 회화는 이미 우리에게 익숙하다. 마치 현대화된 도시 환경에 적응된 한 마리의 새가 착지할 곳을 찾아 바라보는 도시 풍경의 한 단면 같다. 조감도 같다. 적당한 고도의 높이에서 바라보는 풍경이다. 화면의 구조적인 선의 분할과 색면이 주는 공간구성의 특징이 파노라마식의 넓은 풍경을 선사한다. 공간을 구획하고 과감히 생략한 그 넓은 풍경 안의 사실적인 일상 묘사는 상상력을 자극하며 작은 이야기로 도사리게 된다. 과감한 공간구성과 소소한 일상의 디테일이 함께 구성되어 현실과 비현실의 경계를 오고 가며 꿈꾸는 모든 것의 다양한 서사를 그림의 현실로 풀어낸다. 그림의 현실 속에는 선의 분할로 이루어진 거대한 도시 풍경의 사이사이 작게 움직이는 개인의 작은 움직임을 포착하고 있다. 그것은 그림을 그리는 작가 자신이기도 할 것이며, 그림 앞의 모델, 낚싯대만이 덩그러니 남아버리고 주인공은 사라진, 늘 사건이 벌어지고 난 후의 정적이 주는 서사적인 장면으로 읽히고 있다. 마감된 사건의 정적은 현실의 거리에서 벗어난 진공포장의 상태처럼 고요하며 현실에서 비롯하여 비현실적인 화면으로 전환됨에 더욱 부흥하게 된다. 즉, 도시에서 꿈꾸는 것들을 해내고 있는 도시의 일상과 꿈꾸는 일상의 접목이 이루어지고 순간이다. 현실이 비현실이 되고 비현실이 현실이 되는 순환 역전하는 상태가 된다. 그림 속의 높은 고도처럼 멀리서 그림을 보게 될 때와 그림 앞에 가까이 서서 자신의 일상을 보듯 개입하는 비현실과 현실, 양면의 결합이 항상 이뤄진다. 관조하는 자세와 개입하는 자세의 두 가지 양면성을 가지게 된다. 자신 옆에서 벌어지게 될 현실과 동떨어진 비현실의 미묘한 현상들을 동시에 접하게 된다.
민성식의 <낮게 날다>는 그렇듯 모든 경계의 범주를 오고 갈 수 있는 적당한 높이의 낮게 날기이며 조화와 균형에 대한 감각을 품은 그림이다. 거대한 도시풍경의 단면은 개인의 축적된 현실이며 일상의 디테일한 표현은 도시풍경 속에서 얻고, 잃고, 바라고, 하고 싶은, 현실과 꿈꾸는 것의 양면을 가진 풍경이다. 현실과 비현실의 대립된 갈등이 아닌, 관조와 개입의 구획풍경(區劃風景)이라 하겠다.

휴식
휴…휴. 들숨과 날숨. 멀리서 착지를 하려고 빙빙 맴도는 새처럼, 또는 민성식이 생각하는 꿈꾸는 도시인의 이야기들-집짓기, 낚시하기, 그림 그리기, 여행하기, 카누 타기, 캠핑하기, 이주……. 그러한 삶과 휴식의 방법들. 낮게 날며 관조와 개입의 광경을 정확한 질료로 그린 풍경들이 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. ■ 닥터박갤러리 큐레이터 김재원


FLYING LOW

Deep breath!
A low flying, observing view of Songsik Min. Let’s try to follow the views. Artist's unique formative language of sharp colors and drastic plane division. Around when the minimal section's vacuum condition made by the lines is felt, the everyday life starts to be inferred from the story standing on the border line of imaginary and reality. And phew~, continued after the inhalation is the familiar exhalation!! Again inhale!! Color blue expressing the vastness or the high altitude, swimming pool, water. Orange allows the preserved power of the daily life to be almost spread above the open green field and above the grayish concrete of unfinished construction. The lingering feeling of the daily life is the daily life of the disappeared main character, is only the target of an unclear inference, where it is just anyone's daily life. Sometimes only an assumption can be made after a situation takes place. Follow the assumed descriptive screen, and if the sight reached extreme detail then, again exhale!!!

Flying Low
The conversation of Songsik Min is already familiar to us. It is like a side from a city view where one bird adapted to the modernized city environment looks to find a place to land. The division of the structured lines of the screen and the features given by the organized construction of color names presents a large panoramic scene. Division of space and the bold omission of the realistic portrayal of daily life in that large scene stimulate the imagination and lurks it with small stories. The bold space composition and the small details of daily life combines to unravel all the diverse stories dreamt in and out of the boundaries of reality and the imaginary world, by the reality of a picture. Within the reality of a picture a small moving individual's small movement is captured through the large city scene made up with the division of lines. That is also the artist who drew the picture, model in front of the picture and the fishing rod left with the vanished main character, read as a descriptive scene given by the silence always caused after an incident occurs. The silence of a finished incident is quite as the vacuum packed situation outside the roads of reality, and revives as the change is made to the imaginary screen through the reality. Basically, it is the moment of grafting between achieving the daily city life dreamt in the city and the dreamt daily life. The situation is turned by the circulation of reality becoming imaginary and imaginary becoming reality. There is a constant combination of the two intervening sides of reality and the imaginary when one sees the picture faraway like the high altitude in the picture and when one sees the picture nearby like seeing one's daily life. It contains the two double-sides of contemplative attitude and intervening attitude. One can simultaneously encounter the reality that will happen next to one and the distant imaginary subtle situations.

Songsik Min's is the low flying that is the appropriate flying level to be able to move around the areas of all boundaries, and is a picture that contains the sense of harmony and balance. The section of the large city scenery is the accumulated reality of an individual, the detailed expression of daily life is the gaining, losing, wishing, wanting within the city scenery, a double-sided scenery with reality and the imaginary. The reality and the imaginary is not the opposite conflict, but will be divided scenery of contemplation and intervention.

Rest
Phew…phew. Inhale then exhale. Like a bird cycling round and round to land faraway, or the stories of the dreaming city people thought by Songsik Min- Building houses, fishing, drawing, travelling, canoeing, camping, moving…….
